When the Tampa Bay Buccaneers lost to the New Orleans Saints in Week 1, it was understandable.

The Saints were a well-oiled machine across both the coaching staff and the roster, while the Bucs were breaking in plenty of fresh faces, without the benefit of a preseason or even a normal offseason/training camp.

The Cowboys are 2.5-point favorites in the latest Cowboys vs. Saints odds after the spread opened at three, while the over-under for total points scored is 47.5, up 1.5 from the opener. Mickey Spagnola: This will be a Saintly gut feeling, and hopefully it's been blessed, since we're talkin' going way outside the box, predicting the Cowboys will end the Saints' 10-game winning streak, 31-30, Thursday night while extending theirs to four straight. Prevailing thought here is the Saints, as good as they've been, aren't likely to.

Saints

Eight weeks after that 34-23 defeat, the Bucs hosted the Saints in front of a national audience, with a chance to prove they’d found their groove and could compete with the powerhouse of their division.

Instead, the Saints throttled Tampa Bay, 38-3.

Sunday evening, the Bucs will get their chance at revenge, with a trip to the NFC title game on the line.

Have they learned enough, improved enough, gelled enough to avoid a three-game sweep and pull off the upset?

On offense, the answer seems like an easy yes, considering the way that side of the ball has been performing for Tampa Bay in recent weeks. Since their bye in Week 13, the Bucs offense has been seemingly unstoppable, carving up opposing defenses and racking up tons of yards and points. They’re the primary reason why the Bucs haven’t lost a game since that week off. Yes, the Saints are the best defense they’ve faced in a while, but the Tampa Bay offense hit their stride at the perfect time, and they’re ready to hang this time around.

On the other side of the ball, things are a bit more foggy. While the Tampa Bay defense has proven they can make the necessary adjustments to dominate a quality opponent (see their 38-10 blowout of the Green Bay Packers, the No. 1 seed in the NFC, back in Week 6), they failed miserably at doing just that the last time they played the Saints.

If the Bucs are going to upend the Saints, it won’t just take the offense maintaining their current level of output against one of the NFL’s best defenses. It’s also going to take their defense changing up their approach, playing a lot more press-man coverage, sending linebackers after Drew Brees, and helping their pass rush by not giving away easy completions.

Thankfully for the Bucs, they have one of the NFL’s best defensive coordinators in Todd Bowles. He’s smart enough to know what has to be done if the Bucs want to pull this off, and it falls on his shoulders to play to his players’ strengths, and also to the weaknesses of his opponent.

The smart money is on the Saints here, until the Bucs prove otherwise. But the playoffs is where Tom Brady does his best work, and his team has the ultimate chip on their shoulder in trying to avoid a three-game season sweep at rival hands.

With an offense that is finally firing on all cylinders, and a defense schemed to take away what the Saints do best, the Bucs will do just enough to win the only game against New Orleans that will matter this year.

The Dallas Cowboys (3-7) seem to finally be playing up to their potential in going 2-0 under new head coach Jason Garrett, but they will get their biggest test yet when they host the New Orleans Saints (7-3) on Thursday. The Cowboys handed the defending Super Bowl champion Saints (-3.5) their first of three consecutive losses to end the regular season a year ago but will face a much bigger challenge here without injured quarterback Tony Romo.

Veteran Jon Kitna has done a nice job filling in for Romo the last two games after struggling in his first two starts. Kitna has thrown six touchdowns and one interception in beating the Giants and Lions after tossing two touchdowns and six picks in losses to Green Bay and Jacksonville. All of the team’s seven games since the bye week have gone OVER the total.

The Dallas defense has played well in the last two games as well after giving up an average of more than 40 points per game in the previous three. The Cowboys held the Giants and Lions below their season scoring averages and now must try to contain a New Orleans offense that is coming off its two best offensive performances of the season.

The Saints scored 34 points twice in wins over the Panthers and Seahawks with reigning Super Bowl MVP Drew Brees leading the way. Brees has thrown for more than 300 yards in three of the last four games and tossed four touchdown passes in a 34-19 home win against Seattle last week. He was hoping to get running back Reggie Bush back for the first time in eight games, but his fractured fibula was still hurting during pregame warm-ups.

New Orleans head coach Sean Payton said there is a “great chance” Bush will return for this game at Dallas, and the team could definitely use his skills in the return game and out of the backfield. Rookie running back Chris Ivory rushed for 99 yards and a touchdown against the Seahawks, but he has been up and down all season filling in for Bush and Pierre Thomas.

The Saints had been a bit disappointing offensively through the first five games – averaging just under 20 points per game – but they have scored over 27 per game in the last five. Still, the OVER has cashed only twice during the most recent stretch due to the fact that New Orleans has played outstanding defense. Opponents have scored an average of 13.6 points in the last five games for the Saints.
