Dubai Racing Club has released the list of horses accepted for the seven-meeting 2021 Dubai World Cup Carnival (DWCC), which runs for six consecutive Thursdays (Jan 21 – Feb. 25) before culminating with Super Saturday (Mar. 6), the official dress rehearsal for the historic 25th running of the Dubai World Cup card (Mar. 27). The Dubai World Cup, first held in 1996, is an annual event which has placed the UAE on the map and is home to one of the world’s top racing challenges, drawing the attention of millions of enthusiasts around the globe. The 25th running will be held on Saturday, March 27, 2021 and will showcase nine races, featuring some of the best-known names in horseracing.
The highlight of the city’s sporting and social calendar and a fitting event to showcase an activity that has long been known as the ‘Sport of Kings’. Yet, it’s not just horse connections that make the trip to Dubai; with the added attraction of the Dubai World Cup Ceremony, racegoers also fly in from all over the globe to enjoy the unique spectacle that is the Dubai World Cup.
The Dubai World Cup Carnival 2021 is worth about US$6 m in prize money and will be held across 7 race meetings, running from January to March. It is a season of top-class international race days contested by the most high-profile owners, trainers, horses and jockeys in the world. It runs alongside the domestic Racing at Meydan season.
The Dubai World Cup Carnival leads to the iconic Dubai World Cup day, the most prestigious day of racing in the world.
The major prep for Dubai World Cup day is the Super Saturday meeting, to be held on Saturday March 06, 2021, this race meeting alone is worth $1.7 million. Super Saturday allows trainers to put the finishing touches to their equine stars before appearing on racing’s biggest stage – Dubai World Cup day. As the official dress rehearsal for the Dubai World Cup it is a major social occasion.
Number of Horses and Groups
The list features 158 accepted horses, conditioned by a total of 63 trainers from 12 countries. In 2020, the DWCC saw horses from Great Britain, Ireland, Oman, Sweden, UAE, USA, South Africa, Bahrain, Denmark, Korea, Japan, Spain, France and Norway either win or finish placed. In 2021, too there is a great variety of international participation expected based on the horses that have been approved to run.
A total of 42 Thoroughbred races and three group purebred Arabian affairs are on the program, with a host of international stars likely to travel to Dubai to compete. Among the top names are Group 1 winners -the Roger Teal-trained Oxted (G1 Darley July Cup Stakes winner, 2020) and David O’Meara’s trainee Lord Glitters (G1 Queen Anne Stakes at Ascot winner, 2019, third in G1 Dubai Turf behind Almond Eye at Meydan, 2019).

Fawzi-Nass’s Simsir (Bahrain International Trophy winner, 2020) leads the list of returning DWCC stars, alongside Prince Of Arran (Placed thrice in the Melbourne Cup), Certain Lad (G3 Sky Bet And Symphony Group Strensall Stakes winner, York, 2020, sixth in Bahrain International Trophy), Equilateral (G1 placed in King’s Stand Stakes at Ascot, 2020), Doug Watson’s Midnight Sands (Two wins in DWCC 2020, back under Watson’s tutelage after a stint in America) and Suzanne Berneklint’s Plata O Plomo.
Others to watch out for include Australian G3 winner Halvorsen, and Berkshire Rocco who was placed second in the G1 Pertemps St Leger Stakes earlier this year.

CARNIVAL ASPIRANTS TO STAKE THEIR CLAIMS SATURDAY AT MEYDANJanuary 17, 2021

DUBAI (15 January, 2021) – Racing at Meydan on Saturday is the second part of the racecourse’s first double header of the season and highlighted by a pair of 2000m handicaps, one apiece on each surface and both for horses on the cusp of Dubai World Cup Carnival.
In the Al Tayer Motors, the 2000m turf handicap, the capacity field of 14 are set to face the starter with Ahesto Bero and Recordman sharing the burden of top weight.
The former, a 5-year-old Dubawi gelding making his first start for Ismail Mohammed, having represented Simon Crisford three times last season without joy. Ahesto Bero was a dual turf winner in Europe for Andre Fabre and will be having just his ninth career start, seventh on grass.
He is the mount of Fabrice Veron who said: “We would like to think he will prove a carnival horse, so this is a good spot to get him going. He has summered well; his work has been progressive, and he seems a nice new horse for the yard.”
Meanwhile, Recordman is one of two in the race for Satish Seemar and will be ridden by Tadhg O’Shea with Richard Mullen remaining loyal to Irish Freedom on whom he won a 1400m Abu Dhabi handicap in early November, the 7-year-old’s second career win and first locally. Mullen was also aboard Recordman when he doubled his career tally with his one UAE success to date, in a 2400m Abu Dhabi handicap in December 2019.
Mullen said: “It was not an easy choice certainly because I have won on both horses, but Irish Freedom is race fit whereas Recordman has been off since running in the 2000m dirt handicap on this card last year, so will benefit from the run.”
Retained by HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Jim Crowley is in UAE action for the first time this season, partnering Tafaakhor for the in-form Ali Rashid Al Rayhi. The owner’s second jockey, Dane O’Neill, partners Erwan Charpy’s Akwaan.
The 2000m dirt handicap, the Lincoln Navigator, has also attracted the maximum allowed field, in this case 16. Salem bin Ghadayer is enjoying a productive season and Royston Ffrench rides his local debutant Homespin, a homebred 4-year-old Speightstown gelding owned by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum and twice a winner, from ten starts, in Britain for Mark Johnston. Both wins were on turf whereas he was runner-up on both all-weather outings. This will be his dirt debut.
For the same owner, Xavier Ziani partners stable companion Untold Secret who has been kept busy this season and will be having his sixth start of the campaign. A 1950m Jebel Ali winner on his seasonal debut in November, the 9-year-old gelded son of Shamardal was most recently third at Jebel Ali just last Friday.
Mullen and Seemar combine with Miller’s House, a 4-year-old Munnings colt who impressed losing his maiden tag on his penultimate start, in a 1600m Meydan maiden, before failing to land a blow, but not beaten far, over 2000m at Sharjah.
Welsh Lord was impressive on his seasonal debut for Musabbeh Al Mheiri, readily landing a handicap over this 2000m dirt course and distance, defeating Meqdam who then gained revenge, seemingly outstaying him, over 2200m, also at Meydan.
Antonio Fresu was in the Welsh Lord saddle on both occasions and said: “He won well the first day, but was hanging left last time, so hopefully he makes my life easier this week!”
This is the final Meydan fixture before the eagerly awaited 2021 Dubai World Cup Carnival commences next Thursday.

1) The Dubai World Cup is run at a distance of 2000 meters (approximately 1 1/4 miles) at Meydan Racecourse in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), a country on the Arabian Peninsula.
2) Formerly known as “The Richest Race in the World” with a purse of $10 million, it was surpassed in 2017 by the $12 million Pegasus World Cup.
3) Gambling is illegal in Dubai; however, betting on the Dubai World Cup and other races at Meydan is available via simulcast and online wagering in the United States and in Europe (sign up for a TwinSpires account, promo code: helloracefans) Since 2006, the races have been broadcast in the United States on TVG. 4) The Dubai World Cup was run for the first time in 1996. The first edition was won by the American Hall of Famer Cigar.
5) The 2010 World Cup was the first held at Meydan Racecourse. Prior editions had been run at Nad Al Sheba Racecourse. Meydan has a capacity of 60,000 people and World Cup Night attracts spectators from all over the world.
6) The race was created by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai and owner of Darley Stud and Godolphin Racing, two of the wealthiest breeding and racing operations in the world.
7) The race is run on Dubai World Cup Night on a race card that includes eight other races with a total of $30 million in purse money.
8) Of the 22 winners of the Dubai World Cup, 10 had American owners and nine were owned by the host country. The two not owned in the U.S or U.A.E. were the 2010 winner, Gloria de Campeao, owned by Stud Estrela Energia of Brazil, and 2012 winner, Victoire Pisa, owned by Yoshimi Ichikawa of Japan.
9) The winners of the race have been bred in either North America or Europe with the exception of the aforementioned Gloria de Campeao, who was bred in Brazil, and the 2007 winner Invasor, bred in Argentina and, 2011 Victoire Pisa, bred in Japan.
10) Jockey Jerry Bailey won the first two editions of the Dubai World Cup (Cigar and Singspiel). He won it back-to-back again in 2001 and 2002 aboard Captain Steve and Street Cry.

Dubai World Cup History
The Dubai World Cup was first run in 1996 at Nad Al Sheba Racecourse in Dubai. Sheikh Mohammed Al Maktoum, ruler of Dubai and owner of Godolphin Racing and Darley Stud, created the Dubai World Cup to attract the very best equine athletes from around the world for one day of top level racing.
The 9 race card is run with 8 races for thoroughbreds at various distances and one for Purebred Arabians. From 1996 until 2010 the Dubai World Cup was held at Nad Al Sheba Racecourse. Subsequently, in 2010, the race card relocated to Meydan Racecourse but all dirt races were run over a surface called Tapeta made mainly of sand, wax and rubber. In 2015, after poor participation by Americans on Tapeta, Meydan Racecourse transitioned to the dirt track they run on today.
Importantly, the winner of the inaugural running of the Dubai World Cup in 1996 was the immortal Cigar. At the time, Cigar was wildly popular among American racing fans. His race served two purposes: To introduce Cigar to an international audience and to market the Dubai World Cup as the world’s most prestigious horse race.
Dubai World Cup Purse
The inaugural running of the Dubai World Cup had a purse of $4 million in 1996. Since 2010, the race was contested for a purse of $10 million and was the world’s richest horse race until 2017. That year, the Pegasus World Cup was run at Gulfstream Park with a purse of $12 million. Last year, the Dubai World Cup increased its purse to $12 million.
In 2020, the inaugural running of the Saudi Cup had a purse of $20 million. Earlier this year, the Pegasus Invitational dropped its purse from $12 million to $3 million. The Dubai World Cup is once again the world’s second richest horse race.

Prior to that, we saw US trainer Bob Baffert win his third Dubai World Cup with 1-9 favorite Arrogate. In one of the more exciting races you’ll ever see, typically front-running Arrogate broke at the rear of the field, raced wide and in traffic and still managed to close to dominate a star-studded field. 2021 DUBAI WORLD CUP MEDIA ACCREDITATION OPEN
DUBAI (January 18, 2021)—Dubai Racing Club invites members of the media to apply for 2021 Dubai World Cup accreditation. Scheduled for Saturday, March 27, at Meydan Racecourse, this edition marks the historic 25th of the highly anticipated Dubai World Cup. Early applications encouraged.
Applicants should upload 1MB jpg scans of their passport photo page and a photograph. UAE residents will also require 1MB jpg scans of their Emirates ID (front and back) and valid UAE visa scans.
HELPFUL TIPS:
- Apply through your print/photo editor or representative. (They will provide you a link to add yourself as an attendee).
- One application per media outlet ONLY.
- Make sure your passport scan is clear and does not expire within six months.
- Provide a clear photo with a white background; not a cropped passport photo.
- If a UAE resident, do not upload an expired Emirates ID or Visa.
- Accreditation is limited to active, working media.
- Track the Covid-19 related travel guidelines and restrictions relating to your country in relation to the UAE.

There are three bundles you can start off with – Orange ($25/mo), Blue ($25/mo), and Orange + Blue ($40/mo). You can then add channel packs grouped by interest – news, kids, entertainment, and so on – as well as premium networks.
Sling TV features NBC Sports in the Blue and Orange + Blue bundles, so you can pick up whichever one you like best.
Cloud DVR space isn’t something Sling TV users get included in their subscriptions, as they have to pay another $5 per month to be able to record some 50 hours of shows. Then, you can add a couple of channel packs grouped by interest, or even premium networks.
